Kompella VLL
Kompella VLL uses BGP as the signaling protocol to transmit Layer 2 information and VC
labels. It implements the L2VPN function in point-to-point (CE to CE) mode on an MPLS
network.
Kompella VLL is different from Martini VLL. Kompella VLL does not function on the
connections between the CEs directly. Instead, it divides VPNs on the entire SP network and
assigns an ID to each CE in the VPNs. Similar to the BGP/MPLS VPN, the Kompella VLL also
uses the VPN targets to control the transceiving of VPN routes, which makes the networking
flexible.
If you want to set up a connection between two CEs, you need to set the CE IDs of the local CE
and the remote CE on the PE.
The Kompella VLL supports local connections and remote connections. In addition, it supports
Option A inter-AS L2VPN.
The Kompella VLL uses the label block to allocate labels. Through the label blocks, labels can
be allocated to multiple connections at the same time.
You can specify a CE range for the local CE, which indicates the number of CEs that can be
connected to this CE. The system allocates a label block to this CE. The size of the label block
is equal to the CE range. This mode allows you to allocate additional labels to a VPN. In a short
period, this can lead to the use of more labels. This, however, can reduce the effort on
configurations when the VPN is expanded
Assume that an enterprise VPN has 10 CEs and the number may increase to 20 due to service
expansion in the future. Therefore, you can set the CE range of each CE to 20 and allocate labels
to the later 10 CEs. When adding a CE on the VPN, you need to modify the configuration of
only the PE that is directly connected to the added CE.
Inter-AS VPLS
The realization of an inter-AS VLL depends on the actual environment. In CCC mode, the label
is of single layer; therefore, the inter-AS can be realized after the static LSP is set up between
the ASBR devices.
SVC, Martini and Kompella modes can realize the inter-AS Option A (VRF-to-VRF). In the
L2VPN networking, the link type between the ASBRs and the link type of the VC must be the
same. On the ASBR, each inter-AS VC must be configured with an interface (a physical interface
or a bound logical interface). If the number of inter-AS VCs is small, the Option A mode can
be used. The VPLS in inter-AS Option A mode occupies more resources and requires more
configurations.
VLL FRR
With the wide applications of VLLs, the requirement for the reliability of VLLs becomes higher
than before, especially for L2VPNs that carry real-time services such as VoIP and IPTV.
Virtual Lease Line Fast Reroute (VLL FRR) is one of the solutions to increase the reliability of
L2VPNs.
NOTE
S9300 does not support the dual-homed CE .
The VLL FRR supported by the S9300 is mainly used in the following networking mode:
