Steering Mechanical System (Item 4.4)
Inspection
1) With vehicle standing on the ground, wheels straightened
and engine off, check the steering play (A); which must be
in accordance with the specified value.
Steering play (A):
10 ÷ 30 mm
To check play (A), proceed thus:
• From outside the vehicle, through the door window, move
gently the steering wheel left and right.
• Notice the steering wheel play before the wheels start to
move. This is the play (A).
2) If the play of the steering wheel is above the specified value,
inspect the mechanical components of the steering:
- Steering column crossheads
- Tie rods joints
- Fixing of the steering box
- Fixing of cams and turning pivots
NOTE:
This testing should be carried out by two persons
working in coordination; while one moves the steering
wheel the other check plausible plays in the mechanical
components.
3) Check the tightness of the screws and nuts of the steering
mechanical components, including the union the turning
pivots of the sump axle.
4) Check the worthiness of the dust protectors just in case
they are thorn or out their lodgings.
NOTE:
If during the inspection you find some anomaly, repair
of substitute the faulty piece.
5) If abnormal wear of the tyres is detected or there are shakings
while driving, check:
- Tyres are of same type.
- Tyres are equally worn.
- Air pressure of the tyres.
- Steering alignment and adjustments.
- Wheel balancing.
