Measuring the Network Fiber Attenuation
Measuring the Network Fiber Attenuation
During provisioning of the NE, an estimated network fiber attenuation had to be used.
You need to verify these values and act accordingly. You need a second person at the
remote site.
You cannot measure the attenuation of amplified lines. You should
measure each span between optical amplifiers separately.
EQUIPMENT DAMAGE MAY RESULT IF:
If attenuator pads are used on the module network ports. Due to the
protruding connector, this can cause fiber micro-bends.
1. Verify that you are properly grounded with an anti-static wrist strap or heel strap
connected to the grounded ESDjack.
2. Connect a 1550 nm light source to an optical power meter.
3. Turn on equipment.
4. Measure and note the output power of the light source.
5. Turn off the light source and remove the fiber from it.
6. Remove the transmit network fiber from the NE and connect it to the light source. Do
not connect the light source further down the line like at a patch panel.
7. Connect an optical power meter to the opposite end of the network fiber where it
enters the network receiver.
8. Turn on the light source.
9. Measure and note the received optical power.
10. Compute the network fiber attenuation as the difference between the two measured
optical powers and convert it to dB.
11. Compare the network fiber attenuation to the estimated value from provisioning.
12. Take the required action like adapting the provisioned attenuators.
13. Reconnect the network fiber to the NE.
14. Measure the other fiber of the line.
