Practical Issues Regarding Laser Safety
The FSP 3000 C platform is an optical DWDM system that combines individual laser
signals (up to 128 channels) onto a single fiber optic cable through the use of
transmission components such as passive and active filter modules and optical
amplifiers. While the individual channel power levels do not exceed the safety limit, the
combined power level of 128 WDM channels has the potential to exceed the 1M power
limit. The proposition is to prove that various configurations of channel interfaces and
WDM components used on the network link to multiplex wavelengths together in
combination with optical amplifiers do not violate the 1M hazard level.
There are many different product configurations which have to be taken into account for
analysis and documentation. Hereby the focus is on the multiplex or add path where the
power of multiple WDM channels gets combined and the deployment of optical
amplifiers.

All FSP 3000 C channel interfaces with integrated or pluggable transceivers are limited in
their optical transmit power. These maximum TX power limits are taken into account for
analyzing laser safety relevant configurations.
