guidelines in this section, as well as Electrostatic Discharge Damage
Prevention and Warning.
Handling Shelves
When handling a shelf, observe the following guidelines:
l Handle a shelf as an electrostatic discharge sensitive device.
l Handle the shelf by edges only. Avoid touching any exposed contact pins or connector
shells of interface ports that do not have a cable attached.
l Transport or store a shelf (even temporarily) in its original static-protective package
and shipping container.
l Do not remove a shelf from its shipping container until you are ready to mount it into a
rack.
l Do not operate the shelf with open slots.
l Use the front cover to protect the fiber-optic cabling on the front of the shelf.
l Do not touch the backplane with your hand or any metal tool.
l Make sure that adequate air cooling always is provided.
l Do not allow small-sized foreign objects such as wires, screws, etc. to come into
contact with the shelf. These objects could fall through the ventilation openings into
the shelf and cause a short circuit.
l Do not dispose of a waste shelf with the normal trash.
l Do not expose the shelf to rain, dripping or splashing water.
l Do not place receptacles (cups, glasses, bottles) filled with drinks on top of or in close
vicinity to a shelf.
l Do not place objects on top of a shelf.
l Do not smoke when handling the shelf. Cigarette ash may enter the shelf.
