FTM-4
Overview
The SH4R has two redundant fan modules (FTM-4s) installed at the back of the providing
the necessary cooling to keep the modules within acceptable operating temperatures.
The FTM-4s pull air through the shelf cooling the modules and exhaust the hot air
out at the rear.
Figure 16: FTM-4 Faceplate
The internal air temperature in the shelf controls the rotational speed of the fans. The
internal temperature is collected by the ECM-2 from temperature probes mounted on the
different modules.
Under normal ambient conditions, the FTM-4s operate at a low rotational speed. The fan
control integrated in the CEM-4 continually monitors the status of each fan and reports
each fan status to the ECM-2. The status of a fan can also be read from the fan LED
indicator on its faceplate.
If a single FTM-4 does not work properly (such as lower speed than expected), its LED
becomes yellow and a fan abnormal alarm is raised. If an FTM-4 fails, its LED becomes
red and a fan fault alarm is raised. In this case, one minute after fan failure, the intact fans
increase their rotational speed to maximum in order to compensate for the loss of cooling
due to the failed FTM-4.
The failure of a single fan does not endanger the cooling of the
modules in the shelf up to 104°F(40°C) ambient temperature.
However, the failed FTM-4 must be replaced within one minute of
failure.
If two FTM-4s fail, the airflow inside the shelf may be insufficient to
keep the modules cool. The shelf may overheat and shut down of
individual modules may occur.
The air filter pads must be used at all times to prevent dust and debris from entering the
shelf. The pad is included with the air filter unit. The replaceable air filter is accessible at
the bottom of the shelf.
