Electrostatic Discharge Damage Prevention and Warning
l Use a static-dissipative floor mat, if the floor is not conductive.
l Use a static-dissipative work mat, if the work surfaces is not conductive.
l Clean the ESD dissipative work surfaces periodically to prevent build-up of grease or
other layers that will impede the static dissipation. Use only manufacturer
recommended cleaners, cleaners designed for ESD surfaces, or a mild solution of
detergent and water.
l Use conductive field service tools (ESD tools).
l Each electrostatic protected area (EPA) shall be individually connected to the ESD
ground. When more than one ESD worksurface is used at a workstation, each surface
shall be individually connected to the ESD ground.
l An earth bonding point should be installed at each EPA and should be connected
directly to a verified electrical system ground or to a verified grounding bus which is
connected to the protective ground.
l Wrist straps should never be grounded through a working surface, as the added
resistance of the working surface material will prevent the wrist strap from operating
properly.
l ESD working surface should never be grounded in series (i.e. daisy chained).
l Individual Bonding wires should be connected to an EPA common point ground or
earthing bonding point.
l The EPA should be tested for continuity. A surface resistivity meter with a "resistance
to ground" function can be used to test continuity from the ground point to all part of the
work area.
See the International ESD standard IEC 61340-5 for additional
information.
ELECTRIC VOLTAGEWARNING
Exercise extreme care when using energized equipment in an EPA
Ground Fault Current Interrupters should be considered to avoid shock
Most static control equipment is not designed to be used near voltages
greater than 250 volts.
