Laser Safety Information and Guidelines
Optical power launched from an amplifier module into the transmission fiber can be higher
than the Class 1M hazard level specified in the IEC 60825-2:2004+A1:2006+A2:2010.
Such a high optical power can be potentially harmful to the human eye and skin. To
comply with Class 1M laser safety requirements, EDFAs and Raman amplifiers are
equipped with different firmware safety mechanisms designed to detect a fiber break or
connector opening, and as a result of this, to activate APR and/or Automatic Power
Shutdown (APS) functions (depends on the amplifier type).
APR function limits the output signal power by reducing the pump power within a
specified amount of time (defined by hazard level 1M requirements according to IEC
60825-2). APS function shuts down the pump laser within less than 1 second to prevent
the amplified signal or Raman pump out from being transmitted into the open or broken
fiber. To ensure that the FSP 3000 C operates as a hazard level 1M system, some
EDFAs and the Raman amplifiers supports ADVA Optical Networking’s ALS scheme.
LASERRADIATIONWARNING
The organization in charge of operation and maintenance carries the final
responsibility for the safety of the entire system. That includes
particularly to ensure that:
l The laser hazard levels are not exceeded in the various areas for
normally foreseeable events;
l In controlled secured and particularly secured areas in view of
reasonably foreseeable malfunctions, laser hazard level 1M has to be
notified;
l Installation and service are only executed by organizations that are
able to fulfill the regulations of standard IEC 60825-2;
l Appropriate measures are taken for the access to particularly secured
and secured areas regarding laser safety; and
l The regulations regarding the operation, installation, and maintenance
of the system, as well as safety instructions, are always followed.
LASERRADIATIONWARNING
Only configurations approved by ADVA Optical Networking are
guaranteed to comply with laser Class 1M.
LASERRADIATIONWARNING
Risk of laser infrared radiation!
Use of controls, adjustments, or performance of procedures other than
those specified in this document may result in hazardous radiation
exposure.
