STEERING COLUMN DIAGNOSIS
Lock System
Condition Probable Cause Correction
Lock System Will Not D Damaged lock cylinder. D Replace the lock cylinder.
Unlock
D The lack of free movement for the ignition
switch.
D Lubricate the ignition switch.
D Improper binding or damaged steering
column housing.
D Remove the steering shaft and clear
the steering column housing.
D Replace the steering column
housing as needed.
Lock System Will Not D Damaged lock cylinder. D Replace the lock cylinder.
Lock
D The lack of free movement for the ignition
switch.
D Lubricate the ignition switch.
D Improper binding or damaged steering
column housing.
D Remove the steering shaft and clear
the steering column housing.
D Replace the steering column
housing as needed.
High Lock Effort D Damaged lock cylinder. D Replace the lock cylinder.
D The lack of free movement for the ignition
switch.
D Lubricate the ignition switch.
D Extreme misalignment of the housing to the
cover.
D Realign the cover on the housing.
D Replace the cover as needed.
Key Cannot Be D The ignition switch to be set incorrectly. D Reset the ignition switch.

Noise in the Column D Improperly installed intermediate shaftto
column joints.
D Tighten the coupling pinch bolts.
D Replace the intermediate shaft as
needed.
D Column misalignment. D Replace the alignment spacer.
D The lack of lubrication for the joint. D Lubricate the joint.
D The lack of lubrication for the steering shaft. D Lubricate the steering shaft bearing.
D Improperly seated shaft lock snap ring. D Adjust the shaft lock snap ring.
D Replace the shaft lock snap ring as
needed.
D Improperly installed intermediate shaft
pinch bolt.
D Tighten the pinch bolt.
High Steering Shaft D Column misalignment. D Replace the alignment spacer.

D A damaged bearing. D Replace the steering column
housing.
D The lack of free movement for the steering
shaft universal joint.
D Lubricate the steering shaft
