1. Removing piston rings
For removing piston rings, always use the corresponding tensioning device with its
specially designed claws 2 preventing the coating from being chipped off at the
ring ends:

piston ring ’a’ (see Tool List 9403−5).
To prevent deformation it is of the utmost importance not to open the rings
more than absolutely necessary, i.e. allowing removal over the piston
crown.
⇒ Thoroughly clean piston, piston rings and piston ring grooves.
D Take care not to damage the chromed surfaces.

2. Measuring piston rings and grooves
Check all dimensions and record them (see Clearance Table 0330−1 ’Piston and
piston rings’). These records are important for later evaluation of the running gear.
They should encompass all dimensions, the date of overhaul and operating hours
of the various components and of the engine itself.
⇒ Measure vertical piston ring clearance with feeler gauge 94122. For that the
piston ring must be fitted and pressed right into the piston ring groove at the
measuring point.
Remark: If an inspection reveals much wear of the groove chrome layers, then a
new chrome plating is required.
Instructions for reconditioning work of piston ring grooves can be requested from
the engine maker.
