7. Fitting of bearing shells and bearing covers
Bearing covers and bearing shells are marked on their faces with DRIVING END.
Therefore, they must be refitted correspondingly. Moreover, every bearing shell
should be refitted into the bearing girder in its original position.
Crankshaft journal, girder bore for bearing shell, oil bore ’OB’ and all parts to be
fitted must be clean and undamaged!
Fitting of bearing shell and bearing cover is carried out analogously to the removal
but in the reverse sequence, whereby attention must be paid to the following:
7.1 Lower bearing shell
⇒ Fasten Allen screw 5 (Fig. ’A’) to bearing girder 2 on fuel side.
⇒ Immediately before fitting (turning in) the bearing shell, apply a very thin layer
of MOLYKOTE paste G to its the rear side.
⇒ The crankshaft journal and the running surface of the bearing shell must be
thoroughly lubricated with clean engine oil.
⇒ Properly fasten turning-out device 94118a to the front face of lower bearing
shell 4a.
⇒ The bearing shell may be lowered onto the crankshaft with transportation tool
94116a, paying attention that the turning-out device is located on exhaust
side.
D Lead both ropes ’b’ of turning-out device 94118a below the crankshaft journal
and connect them on the opposite side with device 94119b.
D To prevent the bearing shell from sliding into the bearing girder due to the
dead weight, hold the bearing shell and guide it slowly into the bearing girder
(on exhaust side) at the ends of ropes ’a’.
Attention! In order to prevent the risk of jamming, under no circumstances let the
bearing shell slide uncontrolled into the bearing girder!
⇒ Using corresponding tools (same arrangement as for removal), turn bearing
shell completely into the bearing girder until it seats at Allen screw 5 previous-
ly driven in on fuel side.
⇒ Fit and tighten the other Allen screw 5 to retain the bearing shell on exhaust
side.
⇒ Release the pressure at HP oil pump 94931 and lower the crankshaft com-
pletely.
7.2 Bearing cover
D Upper bearing shell 4 (Fig. ’A’) is placed in the bearing cover and retained with
two Allen screws 5. Pay attention to cleanliness during fitting!
D Always use device 94110 for fitting bearing cover 3 as described in section 2.
D Pay attention to spring dowel pins 6 while fitting the bearing cover!
D Clean all contact surfaces on the bearing cover and bearing girder.
D After fitting the bearing cover, waisted studs 7 are to be tensioned as de-
scribed in 1132−1.
⇒ Remove all tools from the engine and below the flywheel.
