System Introduction
1.1 Overview
This chapter introduces the system, features, and hardware of the OLT. Detailed product specifications
are found on Appendix on page 741.
1.2 System Description
The chassis-based OLT2406 (Optical Line Terminal) connects and manages the end to end Gigabit
Passive Optical Network (GPON) or Gigabit Ethernet (GE) solution for delivering broadband data, high-
quality voice, and IP television services over fiber optic cables. GPON provides fiber to the building (FTTB)
or neighborhood (FTTN), fiber to the curb (FTTC), and fiber to the home (FTTH) connections. The following
figure shows example application scenarios for each type of service:
• FTTB/FTTN: The fiber line is connected to a switch in a hotel building, which then connects to devices
using Ethernet or VDSL+POTS cables.
• FTTC: The fiber line is connected to a switch inside a street cabinet, which then connects to homes
using VDSL over POTS.
• FTTH: The fiber optic line passes through a splitter and connects to Optical Network Terminals (ONTs)
inside homes.
