SECTION 6: FAMILIARIZATION
6.1 INTRODUCTION
The information in this section will familiarize you with how the RFL 9300 Charge Comparison System operates.
All controls and indicators are shown and described. A basic start-up procedure appears in this section, and
procedures are included for each of the RFL 9300's four display modes (STANDBY, READ, STARTUP and
PROGRAM). Information is also given on accessing the RFL 9300 through its RS-232 interface.
Each of the modules listed below has a software version associated with it.

(1) This module is only present in RFL 9300s set up for use on three-terminal lines.
Use the READ screen on the RFL 9300 front panel (described later in this section), to determine the software
versions that are in your equipment. These software versions reflect the latest software that was in effect at the
time the unit was shipped.
6.2 CONTROLS AND INDICATORS
The front panel of the RFL 9300 contains controls and indicators which are used to prepare the RFL 9300 for
use, and to monitor system functions. These controls and indicators are shown in Figure 6-1, and are described
in Table 6-1. The RFL 9300 keypad is shown in Figure 6-2, and the functions of these keys are described in
Table 6-2. Table 6-3 contains general information on the RFL 9300 modules and Figure 6-3 shows the locations
of the modules in the RFL 9300 chassis.
6.3 START-UP PROCEDURES
6.3.1 START-UP PROCEDURE FOR A TWO-TERMINAL INSTALLATION
The following procedure is used to start up two RFL 9300 relays. They can either be installed at both ends of a
protected line, or the units can be located side-by-side in a laboratory.
NOTE
It is possible to start up a single RFL 9300 that is communicating with itself (with its transmitter
connected to its own receiver). This procedure is described in Section 8 of this manual.
The addressing feature can be disabled by setting the local and remote addresses to “0000”.
See paragraph 6.6 for more information.
