SECTION 30: GLOSSARY OF TERMS
ACT Auxiliary Current Transformer A small flux-cancellation toroid that transforms the main current trans-
former secondary current to an AC millivolt signal that is an exact rep-
lica of the secondary current. The 9300 contains four ACT’s, one for
each phase and one for 3I
0
(ground).

Amp Amp Abbreviation for Ampere, a unit of electrical current.

Arms Arms Ampere(s) root mean square
AS Arithmetic Sum The absolute value of the sum of the local charge and remote charge
(actually RMS current equivalent to charge), taking polarity into ac-
count.
Local Remote Arithmetic
Examples
Charge Charge Sum
Ex. 1 -6A +4A 2A
Ex. 2 -4A +6A 2A
Ex. 3 +4A +6A 10A
The arithmetic sum is equivalent to the “operate current” in a conven-
tional current differential relay.
AUTO Automatic Automatic
AUX Auxiliary Auxiliary
AWG American wire gauge A standard measuring gauge for non-ferrous conductors. Gauge is a
measure of the diameter of the conductor.
BC-G BC-G fault A fault where phase B and phase C are shorted to ground.
BER Bit Error Rate The number of received communication bits that are in error for a large
number of received bits. For example, if the BER is given as 10
-4
this
means that on average, one bit is in error for every ten-thousand re-
ceived bits.
BL Blocking level Blocking level
BNC BNC A bayonet-locking connector for coaxial cables.
bps Bits per second Bits per second
