SECTION 5: INSTALLATION
WARNING
THE RFL 9300 MUST BE PROPERLY GROUNDED BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO CONNECT
INPUT POWER. IMPROPER GROUND CONNECTIONS MAY RESULT IN SYSTEM
MALFUNCTIONS, EQUIPMENT DAMAGE, OR ELECTRICAL SHOCK.
TO GROUND THE RFL 9300, CONNECT A 16 AWG OR LARGER WIRE FROM THE
GROUND STUD ON THE REAR OF THE CHASSIS (SEE FIGURE 5-2) TO A SOLID EARTH
GROUND. THE GROUND WIRE SHOULD BE KEPT AS SHORT AND STRAIGHT AS
POSSIBLE, TO KEEP ITS RESISTANCE AND INDUCTANCE TO A MINIMUM.
THE RFL 9300 HAS A HORIZONTAL BUS BAR ACROSS THE BACK OF THE UNIT. ITS
PURPOSE IS TO KEEP ALL REAR PANEL MODULES AT THE SAME POTENTIAL. IT IS
CRITICAL THAT ALL BUS BAR SCREWS BE INSTALLED AND TIGHTENED TO 20 INCH-
POUNDS OF TORQUE (2.26 NEWTON-METERS) WHEN THE UNIT IS IN SERVICE.
CAUTION
Before attempting to make power connections, make sure the RFL 9300's power supply
can operate at the available input supply voltage. This can be determined by checking
the label on the power supply front panel. If the wrong voltage is connected to the power
supply, component damage will result.
During normal system operation, the switching of relay contacts can produce voltage
spikes. These spikes can travel down the relay output leads and induce currents in other
leads. These induced currents can result in false trips. To reduce this possibility, use a
shielded twisted pair for each input lead, and ground the shield at the RFL 9300 chassis
only. As an added precaution, do not bundle input, output, and power leads into the
same harness - keep them as far apart as possible.
NOTE
Specific terminals on the rear panel terminal blocks are noted by the terminal block number fol-
lowed by a dash and the terminal number (TB1-1, TB1-2, TB1-3).
5.1 INTRODUCTION
This section contains installation instructions for the RFL 9300, including unpacking, mounting, and intercon-
nection wiring.
5.2 UNPACKING
RFL 9300 equipment may be supplied as individual chassis or interconnected with other chassis or assem-
blies as part of a system. The following paragraphs provide unpacking instructions for individual chassis, and
interconnected chassis. Use the instructions that apply to your equipment.
