6. Using the RFL 9300's READ display mode, check the channel delay time by watching the ping-
pong value displayed on the bottom line of the display.
For short lines without long re-routes through alternative phone lines or micro-
wave paths, the ping-pong value should be about 21 ms. For long lines with
many repeaters, this delay can be 25 ms or more. (The RFL 9300 can tolerate
channel delays as large as 31 ms.)
7. Place the RFL 9300 back in the STANDBY display mode.
The display will return to the moving dot pattern.

8.3.2 DIRECT DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS
The following procedure verifies end-to-end communications for RFL 9300 relays equipped with direct digital
interfaces. No additional equipment is required to perform this procedure.
1. Make sure the connections between the RFL 9300 and the DCE have been properly made.
A shielded multi-pair cable should be used to connect the DCE to 37-pin D-
subminiature connector J4 on the RFL 9300. This connector accepts RS-422 sig-
nals. The cable must be wired according to Table 5-1 in Section 5 of this manual.
2. Check the settings of polarity jumpers J2 and J3.
J2 sets the polarity of the SEND timing signal, and J3 sets the polarity of the
RECEIVE timing signal. Position A selects inverted polarity, and Position B se-
lects normal polarity. The proper jumper settings will depend on the DCE being
connected to the RFL 9300. Try to use the RFL 9300 with J2 and J3 in Position B.
If the SEND timing is not working properly, move J2 to Position A. If the RECEIVE
timing is not working properly, move J3 to Position A.
3. Using the RFL 9300's READ display mode, check the channel delay time by watching the ping-
pong value displayed on the bottom line of the display.
For short lines, the ping-pong value should be 4.0 or 4.5 ms. For very long lines
or lines with many repeaters, this delay can be about 6 ms. (The RFL 9300 can
tolerate channel delays as large as 31 ms.)
4. Place the RFL 9300 back in the STANDBY display mode.
The display will return to the moving dot pattern.
Direct digital communications have now been verified. Go on to the next procedure.
