Groundingofsystemcables
Allmetalliccablecoverings(armour,metallicsheathingandotherprotection)must
beelectricallyconnectedtothevessel'shullatbothendsexceptinthecaseofnal
sub-circuitswheretheyshouldbeconnectedatthesupplyendonly.
Groundingconnectionsshouldbemadeusingaconductorwhichhasacross-sectional
areaappropriateforthecurrentratingofthecable,orwithametalclampwhichgrips
themetalliccoveringofthecableandisbondedtothehullofthevessel.Thesecable
coveringsmayalsobegroundedbymeansofglandsspeciallyintendedforthispurpose
anddesignedtoensureagoodgroundconnection.Theglandsusedmustbermly
attachedto,andingoodelectricalcontactwith,ametalstructuregroundedinaccordance
withtheserecommendations.
Electricalcontinuitymustbeensuredalongtheentirelengthofallcablecoverings,
particularlyatjointsandsplices.Innocaseshouldtheshieldingofcablesbeusedasthe
onlymeansofgroundingcablesorunits.
Metalliccasings,pipesandconduitsmustbegrounded,andwhenttedwithjointsthese
mustbemechanicallyandelectricallygroundedlocally.
Cableconnectionsandterminations
Allcableconnectionsareshownontheapplicablecableplanand/orinterconnection
diagrams.
Wherethecableplanshowscableconnectionsoutsideanequipmentboxoutline,the
connectionsaretobemadetoaplugorsocketwhichmatchestheplugorsocketon
thatparticularitemofequipment.
Wheretwocablesareconnectedinseriesviaajunctionboxorterminalblock,the
screensofbothcablesmustbeconnectedtogether,butnotgrounded.
Caremustbetakentoensurethatthecorrectterminationsareusedforallcable
conductors,especiallythosethataretobeconnectedtoterminalblocks.Inthiscase,
crimpedsleeve-terminationsmustbettedtopreventtheconductorcorefromfraying
andmakingabadconnectionwiththeterminalblock.Itisalsooftheutmostimportance
thatwherecrimpedterminationsareused,thecorrectsizeofcrimpandcrimpingtoolare
used.Inaddition,eachcableconductormusthaveaminimumof15cmslack(service
loop)leftbeforeitsterminationistted.
Cableidentication
Cableidenticationcodescorrespondingtothecablenumbershowninthecableplan
mustbeattachedtoeachoftheexternalcables.
Theidenticationcodesshouldbepositionedonthecableinsuchawaythattheyare
readilyvisibleafterallpanelshavebeentted.
Inaddition,eachcableconductorshouldbemarkedwiththeterminalboardnumberor
sockettowhichitisconnected.
