Thesize,locationanddesignofthesonarroommustfullalltherequirementstothe
vessel’swatertightintegrity.
Intheeventofamajorleak,itmustbepossibletocloseallwatertighthatchesand/or
doorstotheroomtomaintainvesselstabilityandsafety.
Thephysicalsizeofthesonarroommustbelimited,sothatintheeventofamajorleak,
theoodingoftheroomwillnotinduceinstability,orcausethevesseltocapsizeorsink.
Inspectallwatertightdecksandbulkheadsperiodically.Makesurethatthereareno
unprotectedopeningsorimproperpenetrationsthatmayallowprogressiveoodingfrom
thecompartment.Makesurethatthewatertightdoorsandhatchesareinplaceand
ingoodworkingorder.
Installandactivatebilgehighlevelsensorstoprovideanearlywarningofabnormal
accumulationofwater.Positionthesensorsaslowaspossiblealongthecentreareaof
thecompartment,and/orinotherlocationswherethewaterwillgravitatetorst.Inspect
thebilgesensorsperiodically.
Allcablesleadinginandoutofthesonarroommustberuninsteelconduits.Thesesteel
conduitsmustreachupandabovethefreeboarddeck.
Ifrequired,alldesigndocumentsrelatedtothesonarroomandthewatertightintegrity
mustbeapprovedbythevessel’snationalregistryandcorrespondingmaritimeauthority
and/orclassicationsociety.Suchapprovalmustbeobtainedbeforetheinstallationcan
begin.Theshipownerandshipyarddoingtheinstallationareresponsibleforobtaining
andpayingforsuchapproval.
