Circuitboardsandelectronicmodulesaredelicateitems.Theymayworkyearafter
yearinanadvancedproduct,butthenfailduetoasmallsparkofstaticelectricity.For
thisreason,itisveryimportantthattheyareproperlyunpackedandhandled,andthen
wellprotectedduringallhandling.
Prerequisites
Forcorrectandsafehandlingofprintedcircuitboardsandelectronicmodules,youneed
asuitableworkingarea.Theworkingareamustbecoveredbyanapprovedconductive
servicematthathasaresistanceofbetween50kΩand2MΩ,andisconnecteddirectly
toareliableearthpointviaitsearthingcord.You-andallotherservicepersonnel
involved-mustwearawristbandindirectcontactwiththeskin.Thewristbandmustbe
electricallyconnectedtotheservicemat..
Sensitiveprintedcircuitboardsandelectronicmodulesmustalwaysbetransported
andstoredinprotectiveantistaticpackingbags.Itasalsoimportantthattheyarenot
transportedorstoredclosetostrongelectrostatic,electromagneticorradioactiveelds.
Context
BewareofElectrostaticDischarge(ESD)!
Whenyouhandleelectroniccircuitboardsandmodules,youmustbewareofthedangers
ofelectrostaticdischarge(ESD),bothtoyourselfandtotheequipment.Inorderto
ensuresafetransportandstorage,circuitboardsandotherelectronicunitswillalwaysbe
wrappedinaclearplasticprotectivebag,andthebagwillbesealed.

Failuretofollowtheserulesmayresultinanunserviceablecircuitboardormodule.
Procedure
1Prepareasuitableworkbenchwithaconductiveservicemat.
Makesurethatyouwearagroundedwristbandwithdirectcontactwiththeskin.
Whenyouareworkingonboardavessel,an"approvedconductiveservicemat"is
oftenfaraway.Asyoustillneedtounpackcircuitboardsandmodules,makesure
thatyoudoitintheinstrumentroom,orinanotherlocationwithasteeldeck.Keep
farawayfromthebridgeoranyotherroomswithwall-to-wallcarpets!Whenever
possible,alwaysbringawristbandandgroundyourself.
2Liftthecircuitboardormodule,initsprotectiveantistaticpackingbag,outof
thetransportbox.
3Placeitinastablepositionontheworkbench.
