Hullunitinstallationoverview
Thehullunitisalargeandcrucialpartofthesonarsystem.Duetoitsphysicalsize
andweight,andthefactthattheinstallationtrunkpenetratesthevesselhull,itisvery
importantthatthehullunitisinstalledandsecuredproperly.
Prerequisites
Theshipyardmustprovideallnecessarytoolsandmanpower.
Beforeyouinstallthehullunit,youmusthavemountedandpreparedtheinstallation
trunk.Ifyouuseagatevalve,youmusthaveinstalledthemountingange,gatevalve
andtransducerdock.
Relevantcranesandliftingequipmentmustbeavailable.Freeaccessthroughthehullor
thedecksontothetopoftheinstallationtrunkmustbeprovided.
Note
Thehullunitisheavy.Appropriateliftingequipment(liftingtackle,portablecraneor
ship’ scrane)isrequired.Alwaysuseappropriateliftingequipmenttominimizeriskof
personnelinjuryorequipmentdamages.Onlycertiedequipmentmustbeused.

Thehullunit,transducerandtransducercablemustbehandledwithcare.
Note
•Thetransducerisprotectedwithathicklayeroffoamtopreventdamageduring
transportandhullunitinstallation.Thisprotectionmustremainattachedwhilethe
hullunitisbeingmanoeuvredintothesonarroom.
•Thetransduceriscoveredwithathickredprotectivecoatingmadeofaspecial
plastictype.Theredprotectivecoatingisanvitalpartofthetransducer.Itisvery
importantthatneitherthiscoatingnortheinternalpartsofthetransducerare
damagedduringthehandling,installationorcleaning.Anyholesand/orscratchesin
thetransducersurfacewillallowwatertopenetratethetransducer.Ifaleakoccurs,
thetransducermustbereplaced.
•Thetopmatingsurfaceoftheinstallationtrunkmustbeprotectedwithablindange
orwoodencoveratalltimesuntilthehullunitisinstalled.Itisveryimportantthat
thissurfaceiscleanandundamaged,becauseitmustbewatertightafterthehullunit
hasbeeninstalledontopoftheinstallationtrunk.
•TheMotorControlUnitmustneverbephysicallydismountedfromthehullunitgantry.
