Overview
With a muxponder module, one or more clients can multiplex or demultiplex into a single,
high-speed network interface that performs service aggregation. Generally the clients are
low-speed services wherein many can multiplex or demultiplex into the high-speed
network. However, some modules support a single, higher-speed client to the single,
high-speed network.
Network interfaces are generally for connection to the ADVA WDM network through
optical filters or ROADMs. These interfaces vary per application in wavelength, reach,
rate, modulation, and bandwidth. Interfaces might be physically fixed or pluggable. In
some cases, the high-speed network interface provides for module-to-module
interconnection within a single network element.
Client interfaces are generally customer services that interface to customer equipment.
In some cases, the client interfaces provide for module-to-module interconnection within
a single network element. To support this role, the module supports a variety of client
physical interfaces. Client physical interfaces are almost always pluggable.
Muxponder client and network interfaces generally provide extensive support of interface
protocols. This support includes functions such as forward error correction (FEC), digital
performance PMs, fault detection, error forwarding (or line conditioning), and in-band
DCN transport.
Muxponder multiplex or demultiplex methods are generally transparent. In most
applications, the client signal in either protocol or timing remains the same. Client
interface digital PMs and fault detection perform non-intrusively.
