Local Building and National Electrical Codes Warning
Equipment Handling
l Only handle module and components that are sensitive to static electricity in an EPA.
l When you handle any component including a shelf, module, pluggable transceiver, or
connecting cables, verify that the equipment end of your ESD strap is attached to an
ESD jack on the shelf.
l Keep the HD component in its ESD protective bag until you are ready to unpack,
inspect, and install it.
l Always remove the shelf and its modules from their ESD protective packaging at a
static-safe work area only. At a minimum, a static-safe work area must consist of a
static-dissipative mat on a stable surface, a wrist strap for each person, and a
common grounding facility for both, for example, earth bonding points.
l When you inspect, remove, or install a component, always place it component-side up
on a dissipative surface or a static-dissipative mat. If you return a component, place it
in an ESD protective bag before you pack it.
l Before you connect any interface cables, ground your person to dissipate any static
charge.
l Avoid contact between an HD component and your clothing. The wrist strap protects
components from ESD voltages on the body only. ESD voltages on clothing can still
cause damage.
l Limit your movement. Movement can cause static electricity to build up around you.
l Do not stack shelves or modules on top of each other.
l If you plan to return an HD component, immediately place it in a static-shielding bag to
avoid ESDdamage.
l Do not move ESD sensitive parts out of the EPA unless they are properly packaged in
ESD static shielding bags or approved ESD containers.
l Properly seal ESD static shielding bags before you move them out of the EPA.
