Replacing an ECM
Replacing an ECM-2
This procedure assumes that:
l You properly grounded the shelf to the rack;
l You unpacked and properly inspected the replacement module; and
l The replacement ECM-2 has the same software version as the ECM-
2 being replaced.
To make it easier to reattach the cables, make sure they are labeled.
To obtain the ECMdatabase file(s):
1. Download the most recent database backup file to the NCU RAM. See the FSP
3000R7 Maintenance and Troubleshooting Manual.
2. Connect your PCto the NCU and enter these shell commands to extract the
ECMfile(s) from the database in NCURAM.
i. Change directory to /rdisk
# cd /rdisk
ii. Enter this command:
#extract_ecm_files <database filename>
Enter the database encryption password if prompted.
These steps extract the ECM file(s) from the database in NCU RAM. Each ECM file
name has the associated HDshelf ID appended to the end.
To remove the module:
1. Verify that you are properly grounded with an anti-static wrist strap or heel strap
connected to the grounded ESDjack.
2. If installed, remove the front cover from the shelf as described in Removing and
Installing Front Covers.
3. If required, disconnect the cables from the ECM-2.
4. Use a Torx T10 screwdriver to unscrew the thumb screws from the ECM-2.
5. Lift out on the locking levers to disconnect the module from the backplane.
6. Grasp the levers and carefully slide the ECM-2 out of the shelf.
7. Place the defective ECM-2 on a static-dissipative mat.
8. Return the defective ECM-2 to ADVA Optical Networking as described in Returning
Equipment
To install the new module:
1. Verify that you are properly grounded with an anti-static wrist strap or heel strap
connected to the grounded ESDjack.
2. Hold the replacement ECM-2 with the faceplate toward you and the levers extended.
3. Align the ECM-2 edges with the guides of the shelf slot.
