Cleaning Fiber-optic Connectors
Dry Cleaning Technique Using Reel-type Cleaners
1. Verify that you are properly grounded with an anti-static wrist strap or heel strap
connected to the grounded ESD jack.
2. Remove the fiber caps from one or more jumpers and store them in a small,
resealable container.
3. Inspect the fiber using a hand-held fiber scope or video scope. See Inspecting Fiber-
optic Connector and Receptacle End Faces for examples of clean, damaged, and
dirty fiber end faces.
4. If the connector is dirty, clean it with a reel-type cleaner by pressing down and
holding the thumb lever. The shutter slides back, exposing a new cleaning area.
5. Hold the fiber tip lightly against the cleaning area.
o
For single, non-APC fiber connectors, rotate the fiber once through a quarter turn
(90 degrees). DO NOT rotate multi-fiber connectors.
o
For APC connector end faces at single-fiber and multi-fiber connectors, hold the
cleaning area at the same angle as the end face.
6. Pull the fiber tip lightly down the exposed cleaning area in the direction of the arrow or
from top to bottom.
Do not scrub the fiber against the fabric or clean over the same
surface more than once. This can potentially contaminate or damage
your connector.
7. For single fiber connectors, repeat the cleaning process in a second clean slot (reel-
type cleaner) or separate area (pocket-type cleaner)
8. Release the thumb lever to close the cleaning window (if you are using a reel-type
cleaner).
9. Inspect the fiber again with the hand-held fiber scope or video scope.
10. Repeat the inspection and cleaning processes, as necessary.
