Prerequisites
Pairs of connectable fiber-optic jumpers of different lengths and types are delivered with
each equipment shelf. They are color coded and labeled according to usage.
Optical module ports (receptacles) and fiber-optic connectors are susceptible to become
contaminated. The fiber end face and ferrule of the fiber optic connectors must be
absolutely clean and smooth, and must not display scratches or cracks to achieve
correct fiber connections. Microscopic dust particles, finger oils, or any other loose
contaminants on the fiber end faces can cause a number of performance problems in
optical networking if contamination is not completely removed prior to first or any mating
the connectors. Mating a dirty fiber-optic connector can cross-contaminate the receptacle
of the module and/or can permanently damage both end faces of the fibers.
Consequently, the two mated connectors have to be replaced. Therefore, remember that
visual inspection, cleaning, and re-inspection of the fiber optic connectors are all
important steps which must be performed before you make any fiber-optic connection.
Even brand new fiber-optic connector and receptacles needs to be inspected.
Only remove dust covers from module ports and dust plugs from
pluggable transceivers from ports for which you will be connecting
optical cables. For ports you will not be connecting, do not remove
any dust covers or dust plugs as the strong airflow and pressure
within the shelf could cause open ports to become contaminated with
dust.

Prerequisites
Before connecting the internal optical connections, verify the following:
l Do the cable types match the sales order?
l Do the pluggable transceiver types match the sales order?
l If using a patch panel, do you have the correct type of fiber-optic cables that match the
requirements for each module?Do you have the correct quantity of each?
l Do fiber optic cables have correct connectors?
l Is there one pair of fibers for each network/access port?

l ESD-preventive wrist strap or other personal grounding device
l Appropriate cables
l Appropriate fiber tray (installed)
