RISK OF EQUIPMENT DAMAGE
Before connecting the optical cables, you must inspect and clean
them. Dirty fiber can impair system performance.
Adhere to the cautions and warnings throughout this document for a safe
and hazard-free installation. Personnel must understand and apply the
safety guidelines provided in this document. In addition, the safety
notices on the equipment labels should be strictly followed.
Before you start any of these procedures, read the entire section for
important information. For complete safety and compliance information,
see PART 6: SAFETY GUIDELINES.
Overview
Fiber-optic connectors differ from electrical or microwave connectors. In a fiber-optic
system, light transmits through an extremely small fiber core. Fiber cores are for single-
mode fiber in the range of 9 µm and for multimode fiber by 62.5 microns, while dust
particles range from a tenth of a micron to several microns in diameter. Dust and any
contamination at the end of the fiber core can degrade the performance of the connector
interface where the two cores meet.
