Shortening and Assembling DCPower Cables
This procedure assumes that:
l The shelf is properly grounded;
l You need to shorten the DCpower cable; and
l It is mounted in the rack.
DCpower cables are available from ADVA Optical Networking. The
actual length of each DC power cable depends on the location of the shelf
within the rack and its proximity to the DC power source. Therefore, each
power cable should be cut to the proper length and assembled with the
appropriate connectors.
1. Verify that you are properly grounded with an anti-static wrist strap or heel strap
connected to the grounded ESD jack.
2. Measure the power cable length, long enough to connect the shelf to the external
power source (such as Power A).
3. Use a wire cutter to cut the excess cable from the end that connects to the power
source (the end without terminal connectors).
4. Remove enough of the sheath from the end of the cable to expose the wire ends. Be
careful not to damage the insulation of the stranded wires.
5. Use a wire stripper to remove approximately 5 mm (0.2 in.) of insulation from the wire
ends taking care not to damage the small-gauge wires.
6. Insert the stripped end into the open end of the appropriate terminal connector.
7. Use a wire crimper to securely crimp the appropriate terminal connector to the cable
end.
8. Complete and attach an identification label.
9. If required, repeat this procedure for the rest of your power cables.
