Using the Styles and Style Controls
Page 25
Many vocalists have a tendency to drift out of time with the
rhythm section. In a live band this can easily be rectified by
the drummer signaling the other members of the rhythm
section to re-start. This simply means to start counting a
new measure from one using the vocalist as a guide which
will place everybody back in time again. Pressing RESTART
on the Genesys Ensemble accomplishes the same thing.
The current style pattern will jump back to beat 1 regard-
less of where it was when you pressed RESTART. Techni-
cally speaking, RESTART is a fairly non-musical function which
would normally only be used to rectify the type of problems
described here. However, it does have another interesting
use. RESTART can be used in songs where one measure has
a different time signature or meter to the rest of the song.
For example, a song written in 4/4 time might contain a
single measure of ¾ or 7/4. If you press RESTART after the
3
rd
beat of a 4/4 pattern it will give the effect of a single
measure of ¾ having been inserted into the song.
To stop the style, press START/STOP in the
normal way. To start the style again, just play
something on the left side of the split as be-
fore, (because SYNCRO is still on).
You can also use SYNCRO to automatically stop
the style when you release the chord played
on the left side of the split. To do this simply
turn off the ARR. MEM, (arrangement
memory), button in the STYLE TOOLS section
while SYNCRO is turned on. Now you can con-
trol both the starting and stopping of the style
with your left hand.
The RESTART button is a useful utility which is especially
effective when accompanying other instrumentalists or vo-
calists.
