Overview FX Control Bus

FX Control Bus
The FX Control Buses let you create effects “sidechains.”
Sidechains let you control an effect with one audio signal (the
sidechain), while the effect processes a completely different audio
signal.
This is convenient for use with vocoders and limiters, gates, etc.
You can use a voice-type timbre to modulate a synth-type input to
create rhythmic vocoder effects. Limiter or gate-type effects are
often used to control an input using a different sound.
KROSS includes two true- stereo FX Control Buses, which can be
used with the following effects:
Vocoder
D09: Vocoder
Limiter, and gate effects
S03: Stereo Limiter
S06: Stereo Gate
Example: Limiter (Combination)
Dynamics-type effects typically control the output level according
to the level of the audio input signal. Some of the effects of the
KROSS can control the output level using the signal of effect
control buses 1 or 2, instead of the audio input.
The illustration below shows an examplewhere the volume of a
low-frequency range pad sound (Pad) is being lowered according
to the volume of a high-frequency range guitar performance. The
guitar sound (Guitar) is being output via insert effect 2 (IFX2) OD/
Hi.Gain Wah, which is sent to the effect control bus 1 (FC1) so
that the insert effect (IFX1) can detect its level and control the
insert effect 1 (IFX1) Stereo Limiter which is the output of the
pad-type sound (Pad).
Example: Vocoder (Program)
A vocoder effect modulates the audio input (Carrier) by a separate
audio input signal (Modulator), producing a distinctive effect. In
the illustration below, the output of oscillator 1 (OSC1) and
oscillator 2 (OSC2) is the carrier, and the audio input from a mic is
being used as the modulator, creating the impression that the
oscillators are “talking.” Send the carrier (OSC1 and 2) via “Bus”
to insert effect 1 (IFX1); for the AUDIO INPUT mic input
(modulator), choose effect control bus 1 (FC1) for “FX Control
Bus,” and specify FX Control 1 as the “Mod Source” for IFX1:
Vocoder.
Example: Rhythmic Vocoder (Combination)
The vocoder is a unique effect that uses one audio signal (the
modulator) to modulate another audio signal (the carrier). By
using an arpeggiated drum pattern as the modulator, you can pro-
duce a rhythmic vocoder effect. As shown in the illustration, this
example sends the drum pattern played by the timbre 2 arpeggia-
tor to the FX Control bus and uses it as the vocoders modulator.
For timbre 1 (the carrier), set Bus to IFX1, sending it to IFX1:
vocoder. For timbre 2 (the modulator), set FX Control Bus to
FC1, sending it to FX control bus 1. Set IFX1: Vocoders Mod
Src to FX Control 1 so that the arpeggiated drum pattern signal of
timbre 2 will be the modulator for the vocoder.
Effect I/O
For each effect, make the input signal level as high as possible
without causing distortion.
For each effect, make the input signal level as high as possible
without causing distortion. Also, use the Wet/Dry parameter for
the Insert Effects and the Wet/Dry or Return 1, 2 parameter for
the Master Effects to adjust the effect output level.
If the input level is too low, the SN ratio may decrease. On
the other hand, if the input level is too high, clipping may
occur.
The following table shows the parameters related to the level set-
tings:
