7.1.3 Fuel supply
ADVICE
Hazard of damage to the environment from leaking fuel. When working on the filter,
first set up the catching pan and properly dispose of fuel caught.
WARNING
Burning hazard when handling diesel fuel.
Smoking, fire and open flames are prohibited when handling diesel fuel, because fuels
are easily combustible and fuel fumes cause an explosion hazard. Always make sure
of sufficient supply of fresh air when handling fuels.
Hazard of skin injuries and poisoning. Diesel fuel may cause damage to the skin in
case of direct contact. When handling diesel fuel, always wear suitable protective
gloves, avoid inhaling fuel fumes, because it may lead to poisoning effects.
Diesel fuel is sucked by the fuel pump through the fuel prefilter with integrated electric
pump and integrated water separator and then pumped through the fuel prefilter and
the main fuel filter cartridge to the pump-nozzle elements.
Help by diesel engine start:
The electric pump (4) switches on after every switching on of the ignition for a limited
period of time. It serves to forward possibly fallen back fuel to the engine and to facil-
itate the starting action of the engine. The electric pump is activated every time the
engine is started. Once the engine has started, the electric pump is switched off.
4
ADVICE
The electric pump cannot be switched on with the engine running; in the "Special func-
tions" menu in the "Service fuel filter" line do NOT set the option to "ON".
The filter cartridges must be exchanged according to the maintenance plan. The fuel
filter cartridge must be changed immediately regardless of the operating hours as soon
as the icon appears on the R-Touch. See Page 374
However, if the following icon appears on the R-Touch, the fuel prefilter insert at the
electric pump must be exchanged. (See Page 373)
