19.4.2. Charging batteries
ToaccessthechargingmenusgotoSystems > DC System > System Functions > Charging.Note
thatyoumusthaveabatterydefinedintheDCsysteminordertohavethismenuitemavailableunder
System Functions.
Leadacidbatteriesshouldbechargedinthreestages,whichareconstant-currentcharge,absorption
charge,andfloatcharge.Theconstant-currentchargeappliesthebulkofthechargeandtakesuproughly
halfoftherequiredchargetime;theabsorptioncharge,alsoknownastoppingcharge,continuesata
lowerchargecurrentandprovidessaturation,andthengoesintofloatmode.
Charge Current Control duringbulkcharginghelpsincreasebatterylongevitybykeepingthebattery
currenttowithinspecifiedlimits.Chargecurrenttothebatteryduringrechargewillbelimitedtoavalueas
programmedinthePrimary Charge Current Control table.
Thisvalueisderivedfromthebatterymanufacturer’sspecificationsheet.
Chargecurrentcontrolmayattimesbesuspended.Forexample:alargenegativeloadcurrentthat
indicatesafailcurrentsensor.WhenthisoccursCharge Current Control State willreadSuspended
andCharge Current Control Suspended Reason willdescribethereason.Thisinformationcanbeused
inassistingwithtroubleshooting.
ElevatedAbsorptionchargingcanbeusedafteraprolongedACpowerfailure,whenthebatteryvoltage
hasdecreasedtoalowlevel.Oncethebatterieshavedecreasedbeyondtheabsorptionlowvoltage
threshold,thecontrollerwillenteranarmedmode.WhenACpowerreturns,thesystemvoltagebeginsto
increase,whichchargesthebatteries.
Oncethesystemvoltageincreasestothehighvoltagethreshold,thecontrollerbeginstoabsorption
chargethebatteriesattheelevatedabsorptionvoltageforaperiodspecifiedintheAbsorption Charging
table.
ThisisdonetoensuretheElevated Absorption Timeout isnoteffectivelyreducedbythetimeittakesto
rechargethebatterybacktonominalsystemvoltage.
ElevatedAbsorptionchargingcanbeterminatedonthebatterycurrenttopreventover-chargingofthe
battery.ElevatedAbsorptionwillterminatewhenthebatterycurrentfallsbelowthespecifiedthreshold.
ElevatedAbsorptionchargingcanalsobeterminatedorpreventedfromstartingbysettingtheTerminate/
Disallow Elevated Absorption When True settingtoacustomdatacondition.
Uponinitialactivationofelevatedabsorptioncharging,thebatterycurrentischeckedtoseeifithas
fallenbelowtheElevated Absorption Termination Threshold.Whenthebatterycurrentfallsbelowthe
threshold,andremainsbelowthethresholdforthirtyseconds,theabsorptionchargingcontinuesatthe
nominalsystemvoltage.OncethechargingcurrentislowandstablethesystemreturnstoFloatmode.
