What is CAN power?
CANpowercanbesuppliedthroughCANbus.OptionallyapowersupplyfortheCANbusmodulescan
bearrangedseparately.ThepowersupplywiringcanbeeithertotallyseparatefromtheCANbuslines
usingtwo,two-wirecablesoritcanbecombinedwiththeCANbuslinesintoasinglefour-wirecable.
CANbuscablingisavailablefrommultiplevendors.
How are Alpha® CAN cables wired?
TheAlpha®CANconnectorisa6P6Coffsetlatchmodularconnector.Themaleconnectorsarecalled
plugsandthefemaleconnectorsarecalledjacks.Youmayalsoheartheseconnectorsreferredtobytheir
registeredjack(RJ)equivalent:RJ11,RJ14,andRJ25areallphysicallycompatiblewith6P6Cmodular
connectors.ThefollowingfigureshowstheCANpinoutfora6P6Coffsetlatchmodularplug.Pins1and6
areusedforCANpowerwhilepins2and4areusedforCANsignaling.

TheelectricalcharacteristicsofatypicalCANbuscablerestrictthecablelength.Werecommendhaving
nomorethanonelongCANcableonaCANbusandtorestrictthelengthofthatlongcabletolessthan
100meters(328feet).
