Absorption charging
Aftertheabsorptionchargingstage,thebatteryshouldbeina95to98percentstateofcharge.Onthe
Systems > DC System > System Functions > Charging page,ontheElevated Absorption Charging
Status table,youhavetheoptiontochargethebatteryatavoltagehigherthanthefloatvoltage.The
highervoltageisusedtospeeduptheabsorptionchargingstageafteraprolongedACpowerfailure.
Conditioning - float
Theconditioningorfloatchargingstagebringsthebatteriesto100percentstateofchargeandmaintains
itthere.WhenthesystemisintheconditioningstageitisusuallyattheFloat Voltage.Whenthesystem
isinconditioning-float,ahigherEqualize Voltage orBoost Voltage canbeappliedfromtheSystems >
DC System > System Functions > Equalize & Boost menu.
Conditioning - equalization
Whenastringofbatterycellsorblocksarecharged,asinglechargecurrentisappliedonthegroup.
Ifthevoltagesofthecellsorblocksbegintodiffer,thechargeimbalancecanleadtobatteryfailure.
ApplyingahigherEqualize Voltage toafullychargedbatterystringsubjectsthestrongercellsorblocks
tooverchargebutthisalsoallowstheweakercellsorblockstoregaintheirfullcharge.Whenthevoltage
isreturnedtotheFloat Voltage,thestrongercellsshedtheiroverchargeandthebatterystringshouldbe
morebalancedorequalized.
ApplyinganEqualizeVoltage(anovercharge)toafullychargedbatterycanalsobeusedtoreverse
sulfation.
CAUTION: Applying an overcharge to a battery string also has negative effects on the batteries.
See the battery manufacturer’s guide to determine whether an equalization voltage should be
used at all. If so, what the voltage and the duration should be, and how frequently an equalization
charge should be applied.
Conditioning - boost
Thepurposeofboostissimilartoequalize-toequalizecellsorreversesulfation.Boostvoltageisusually
ahighervoltagethanequalize.Infactitcanbetoohighfortheloadandthereforerequirethepresenceof
droppingdiodestobeswitchedintothecircuitbetweentherectifiersandtheloadtopreventdamageto
theload.Beforeboostcanbeactivated,thedroppingdiodesmustbeswitchedintothecircuit.
5.2.4. Battery temperature compensation
Temperaturecompensation(TempComp)isusedtoprolongbatterylifeandhelppreventthermal
runaway.Whenbatterytemperaturecompensationisenabled,thecontrollerusesthebatterytemperature
tocalculateanoffsetwhichisappliedtothebatteryvoltage.
