TheES80hasadynamicrangeof140dB.ThismeansthattheES80canreceive
bothverystrongandveryweakechoes.Naturally,wecannotpresentallthese
echoesonthedisplaysimultaneously,asthiswouldcreateamessofcolours.
Bydefaultyouhave64or12coloursavailabletopresenttheechoes,andaselection
ofpalettes.When12coloursareused,wecreatea36dBtotalrange,andleteach
colourpresenta3dBstrength.Everycolour(3dB)therepresentadoubling
ofthe
echostrength.With12coloursinusethiswillbea36dBcolourrangefromgreyto
brown.Greyisusedfortheweakestechoes,whilethestrongestechoesarebrown.
Allechoesstrongerthanbrownwillstillbebrown,whileechoesweakerthangrey
willnotbeshown.With64coloursinuse,eachcolourrepresentsapproximately
0.5dBechostrength.
TheColourSetupdialogboxallowsyoutochoosefromseveralcolourscalestouse
intheES80echopresentations.Whichcolourscaletouseismainlyapersonal
preferencebasedonambientlightconditions,thenatureoftheechoesandyour
ownexperience.Ifyouchoosetousemanycolours,theresolutionoftheES80
presentationisgreatlyimproved.Itistheneasiertodistinguishthedifference
betweenthevariousechoesofdifferentsizeand/ortargetstrength.
