impedancecurve.Oldertransducerswith"ton-pilz"elementshaveaslightlyhigher
impedanceatthebeginningoftheping.Thisisbydesign.
•Ifyoumeasure∞Ω(opencircuit),youcanassumethatthetransducerimpedance
transformerhasbroken,orthatthecableisdamaged.
•Ifyoumeasure0Ω(short),youcanassumethateitherthetransducerimpedance
transformerorthecablehasshorted.Youmayalsohaveaproblemwithsalt
waterpenetration.

Inspectingandcleaningthetransducerface
Marinegrowth(biologicalfouling)onthetransducerfacereducestheES80performance.
Forthisreason,itisimportanttokeepthetransducerfaceclean.Everytimeyourvessel
isindrydock,youmustremovethemarinegrowth.Atthesametime,youmustinspect
thetransducercloselyforphysicaldamage.

•Amildsyntheticdetergentandaplasticbrush
•Apieceofwoodorplasticwithoutsharpcorners
•Citricacid(<50%)(onlyifrequired)
Context
Duringnormaluse,thetransducerissubjectedtobiologicalfouling.Ifthismarine
growthisexcessive,itwillreducetheperformanceoftheES80.Wheneveropportunity
arise,typicallywhenthevesselisdry-docked,thetransducerfacemustbecleanedfor
shellsandothermarinegrowth.
Itisimportanttocheckthetransducerforphysicaldamage.Anycracks,fracturesor
holesintheredprotectivecoatingmayresultinawaterleak,andaleakmaycause
irreparabledamagetothetransducer.
