InPassivemode,theES80willreceiveandcomputethesignalsdetectedbythe
transducer(s).Thismodeisthususefulfortestpurposes,andwhenyouwishto
measuretheambientbackgroundnoiseinthesea.Itcanalsobeusefultorun
theES80inPassivemodetodiscriminatebetweentargetechoes(presentonly
inActivemode)andnoise(presentinbothActiveandPassivemodes).
•Test
Thetransmitterispassivewhilethereceiverisactive.Thismodeisnotdesigned
foroperationalusewiththeES80.
PulseDuration
ThePulseDurationsettingspeciesthecurrentduration("length")ofthe
transmittedpulse.Youcanmanuallyselectapulsedurationthatsuitsyour
operation.Youcanalsochooseautomaticduration.
Tip
WhenyouselectAuto,theES80willautomaticallyselectthebestpulseduration
forthecurrentoperationalmode,depthandbottomconditions.Fornormaluse,
werecommendthatthepulsedurationissettoAuto.
Thepulsedurationcanbeadjustedaccordingtothecurrentdepthandwhatkind
ofshyouarelookingfor.Thedeeperyouwishtosee,thelongerpulseduration
shouldbeused.RememberthatintheES80,thepulsedurationandthebandwidth
aremutuallydependant.
•Longpulse=>lotsofacousticenergy=>narrowbandwidth=>lesssensitive
fornoisefromownvesselandenvironment
•Shortpulse=>lessacousticenergy=>widebandwidth=>moresensitivefor
noisefromownvesselandenvironment
Power
YouarepermittedtoadjusttheoutputpoweroftheES80.Youcannotincrease
thepowertobeyondthetransducer’scapacity,butyoumayreduceitforbetter
performanceinshallowwater,orifyouarestrugglingwithreverberation.
ThePowerparameterintheNormalOperationdialogboxdisplaysthetransmitter's
outputpowermeasuredinWatts.Youcanchangetheoutputpowermanually.
Outputpowerislimitedeithertothemaximumratingofthetransducer,orthe
maximumratingofthetransmitter,whicheveristhesmallest
.Forallpractical
purposes,thismeansthatyoucanreducethepoweroutput,butyoucannot
increaseittobeyondthepowerratingofthetransducer.
