Forshortpulses,therampingmightconvergetoSlowramping.
TheadvantagewithFastrampingisthatthetransmittedpulsecontainsmoreenergy
relativetothepulselength.Thisincreasesthesignal/noiseratio.Whenyouapply
"chirp",thetransmissionfrequencychangesfromalowfrequencyatthebeginningof
thepulsetoahighfrequencyattheendofthepulse.Thecombinationofchirpand
Fastrampingwillsignicantlyincreasethesignal/noiseratio.
•Slowrampingmeansthatthersthalfpartofthetransmitsignalisusedtorampup
theamplitudeandthelasthalfpartisusedtorampdowntheamplitude.
TheadvantagewithSlowrampingisthatthepulsehaveasmoothstartandstop.This
signicantlyreducesthetransientsintothematchedlterandthereforeyouget
reducedsidelobesintime(range)atacostofslightlyreducedrangeresolutionatthe
outputofthematchedlterforFMpulses.
Thesidelobesintime(range)willthusbelowerwithSlowrampingthanwithFast
ramping.Smallersidelobesintime(range)willreduce"crosstalk",asastrongecho
fromonerangewillnotcontaminateweakechoesfromotherranges.Increasedecho
discriminationisparticularlyusefulwithechoesofdifferentstrength.
