15). The clockspring mou nting scr ews should not be
tightened into th e clockspring ca se un til t he clock-
spring has been insta lled on th e steerin g colum n. If
the screws are t igh tened into or removed from the
case before the clockspring is insta lled on a steerin g

performed.
WARNING: To avoid personal injury or death, on
vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the supple-
mental restraint system before attempting any
steering wheel, steering column, airbag, seat belt
tensioner, impact sensor, or instrument panel com-
ponent diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate
the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two
minutes for the system capacitor to discharge
before performing further diagnosis or service. This
is the only sure way to disable the supplemental
restraint system. Failure to take the proper precau-
tions could result in accidental airbag deploy-
ment.
NOTE: Before starting this procedure, be certain to
turn the steering wheel until the front wheels are in
the straight-ahead position.
(1) Pla ce t he front wheels in the str aight-a head
position .
(2) Remove the clockspring from the steerin g col-

CLOCKSPRING - REMOVAL).
(3) Tighten t he t wo clockspring moun ting screws
all the way int o the clockspr ing case.
(4) Rotat e the clockspring rotor counterclockwise
to t he end of its tra vel. Do not apply excessive
torque.
(5) From the end of the count erclockwise travel,
rotate the rot or about three to th ree an d one-h alf
turns clockwise, u ntil the cleara nce holes in the
clockspr ing rotor are a ligned with th e two mou ntin g
scr ews in the clockspring case. Th e clockspring is
now cen tered.
(6) Loosen th e t wo clockspring mounting screws
far enough so tha t t hey extend in to the clearance
holes in the upper surfa ce of the clockspr ing rotor,
pr eventing the rotor from chan gin g position r elative
to th e clocksprin g case.
(7) The front wh eels should still be in the str aight-
ahea d position . Reinst all th e clockspring onto th e
st eering col u mn. (Refer to 8 - ELE CTRICAL/RE-
STRAINTS/CLOCKSPRING - INSTALLATION).
