DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - WIPER &
WASHER SYSTEM
If the wiper motor oper ates, bu t the wipers do not
move on t he windshield, r eplace the faulty wiper
lin kage module. If th e wash er pump/motor opera tes,
but no wash er fluid is dispensed on th e glass; or, if
the wipers oper ate, but chat ter, lift, or do not clear
the glass, clean and inspect the wiper and washer
system componen ts a s required. (Refer to8-ELEC-
TRICAL/WIP ERS/WASHE RS - CLEANING) a nd
(Refer t o 8 - ELECTRICAL/WIPERS/WASHERS -
INSPECTION). For dia gnosis a nd testing of the
multi-fu nction switch (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/
LAMPS/LIGHTING - E XTERIOR/MULTI-F UNC-
TION SWITCH - DIAGNOSIS AND TE STING).
Refer to th e appropriate wiring infor mation. Th e wir-
ing information includes wirin g diagram s, proper
wire a nd connector repair procedu res, details of wire
harness routing and ret ention, connector pin-out
information and loca tion views for th e various wire
harness connectors, splices an d grounds.
The h ard wir ed circuits and compon ents of t he
wiper and wa sh er system may be diagnosed an d
tested using conventional diagn ost ic t ools a nd proce-
du res. However, conventional diagnostic methods
may not prove conclusive in the diagn osis of th e
intermittent wipe logic circuitr y contained with in t he
fuse block u ndern eath t he steerin g column , th e ra in
sensor wit hin t he base of the rear view mirr or on the
windshield, or th e rain sen sor control m odu le under
the instrument panel.
WARNING: To avoid personal injury or death, on
vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the supple-
mental restraint system before attempting any
steering wheel, steering column, airbag, seat belt
tensioner, or instrument panel component diagno-
sis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery
negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for
the system capacitor to discharge before perform-
ing further diagnosis or service. This is the only
sure way to disable the supplemental restraint sys-
tem. Failure to take the proper precautions could
result in accidental airbag deployment.
