right rea r door is standard equipmen t on wagon mod-
els. Th e sliding an d rear door jam b switches ar e not
ava ila ble for van models.
• En try /Ex it La m p - An entry/exit la mp to illu-
minate each front an d sliding side door step well i s
opt ional equipment on wa gon models.
• Time Del ay Re l ay - Vehicles equipped with the
opt ional rem ote cargo lamp switch es also h ave a tim e
delay rela y located in the electr ical center with in the
dr iver side front seat riser.
Hard wired circu itry connects the inter ior lighting
system component s to th e electrical system of th e
vehicle. These ha rd wired circuits are integra l to sev-
eral wire harn esses, wh ich are routed t hroughout t he
vehicle and r etained by many differ ent meth ods.
These circuits may be con nected to each ot her, to th e
vehicle electrical system and to the interior ligh ting
system components thr ough th e use of a combina tion
of soldered splices, splice block connectors, and man y
differen t types of wire ha rness terminal connectors
and in su lators. Refer to th e appropriate wiring infor-
mation. Th e wiring inform ation inclu des wiring dia-
gra ms, pr oper wire and con nector repair procedu res,
further details on wire harn ess routing and reten -
tion, as well as pin-out and loca tion views for the
var ious wire ha rness connectors, splices an d grounds.
OPERATION
The interior lighting systems can be divided into
two general classificat ions based upon the circuit
that controls their operat ion: The in terior lighting
circuit, or th e exterior light ing cir cuit. The hard
wired circuits and componen ts of t he int erior lighting
systems may be diagnosed and tested using con ven-
tional diagn ost ic tools and pr ocedu res.
INTERIOR LIGHTING CIRCUIT
Depending upon the v ehicle model (va n or wa gon)
and the selected veh icle options the in terior lighting
circuit ma y include dom e/cargo lamps l oca ted over-
head in the front a nd rea r of th e vehicle, a dome/
reading lamp loca ted in the hea der ar ea above th e
windshield between the su n visors, and entr y/exit
lam ps located in th e front and sliding side door step
wells.
WAGON MODELS
In all wagon models, t he la mps in the interior
lighting ci r cuit are provided with battery cur rent at
all times by a fu se in the fuse block beneath the
st eering column. The front , side, and rear door jamb
switch es contr ol a ground path for ea ch of th ese
lam ps, except for t he option al readin g lamp. If t he
lam p has an optional integral switch, th at switch has
three sepa rate positions. The first posit ion provides a
ground path indepen den t of the door jamb swit ches
to turn the lam p On. The second, or center posit ion
allows the door jamb switch es t o contr ol th e lam p.
The th ird position segregates that la mp from t he
door jam b switch inpu t, turning the lam p Off. In the
case of th e option al dom e/reading lam p, the in tegral
lam p switch ha s a fourth position which will illum i-
nate only the reading lam p bulb.
VAN MODELS
Unless a van model is equipped wit h an optional
remot e cargo lamp switch, all of t he lamps in t he
interior ligh tin g cir cuit operate t he sam e way as the
wagon models except t hat ther e are on ly two door
jamb switches, one for each front door. If the vehicle
is equ ipped wit h an opt iona l remote cargo lamp
switch , the lamps in t he rear of the vehicle on the
interior lighting circuit are pr ovided with ba tter y
curren t by the tim e delay relay. The time delay r elay
is a smart relay conta ining active electr onic elements
that compr ise an electronic t imer logic circu it. When
the remote cargo lamp swit ches pr ovide th e pr oper
input to the time delay relay, the relay logic responds
by energizing t he relay control coil. The energized
rela y contr ol coil provides ba tter y curren t to all of
the la mps on the rear inter ior lighting cir cuit and to
the in dicator Light -Emitting Diode (LED) units in
the rem ote cargo switch es cau sing each to illuminate.
If a rem ote cargo la mp switch rema ins On for mor e
than a bout fifteen m inu tes, the time dela y relay will
then autom atically de-energize the rear int erior
lighting circuits until th e rem ote cargo lam p switch
is cycled Off and then back On .
EXTERIOR LIGHTING CIRCUIT
The exterior lighting circuit provides ba tter y cur-
rent to the opt iona l ash receiver/cigar ligh ter lamp
and to th e illuminat ion Ligh t-Emitting Diode (LED)
unit wit hin the r emote cargo lam p switch in the
instr umen t panel accessory switch bezel whenever
the exterior lamps are tu rned On .
