VALVE S PR INGS
REM OVAL
REMOVAL - VALVE SPRINGS
(1) Disconn ect nega tive battery cable.
(2) Remove injectors (Refer to 14 - FUEL SYS-
TEM/FUEL INJ ECTION/FUEL INJ ECTOR -
REMOVAL).
(3) Remove cylinder head cover (Refer to 9 -
ENGINE/CYLINDER HEAD/CYLINDER HEAD
COVER(S) - REMOVAL).
(4) Remove timin g ch ain tension er (Refer t o 9 -
ENGINE/VALVE TIMING/TIMING BE LT/CHAIN
AND SPROCKETS - REMOVAL).
(5) Remove front cover a t cylinder h ead (Refer to 9
- ENGINE /CYLINDER H EAD - RE MOVAL).
(6) Remove top guide rail (Refer to9-ENGINE/
CYLINDER H EAD - RE MOVAL).
(7) Remove camshafts (Refer to 9 - ENGINE/CYL-
INDER H EAD/CAMSHAFT(S) - RE MOVAL).
NOTE: The timing chain must be held in up position
so as not to jam during procedure.
(8) Position piston of cylin der t o be processed to
DTC by rotatin g the crankshaft clockwise. DO NOT
crank engine. DO NOT rotate engine backward.
CAUTION: Make sure the crankshaft lock is in posi-
tion and properly secured for each cylinder being
serviced. Failure to do so may result in damage to
the vehicle or personal injury.
(9) In st all cran ksha ft lock, special tool #8932.
(10) Seal injector hole with a da pt or # 9534 and
reta in wit h origina l ten sioning claw.
(11) Connect regulated air supply to special tool #
9534 a nd pressurize t he cylin der t o 5 bar (73 psi.).
WARNING: Valve springs and retainers must be
kept in order of the cylinder they were removed.
NOTE: Using valve service tools #9307, screw
retaining fork into threaded edge of cylinder head
and position thrust piece vertically at top of each
exhaust valve spring retainer. Use the cam bearing
cap threaded holes to position service tool for
removal of intake valve spring retainers.
(12) Compress valve spring (Fig. 26).
(13) Remove va lve colla tes (Fig. 26).
(14) Remove top valve spring retainer and va lve
spring (Fig. 27).
