locat ed bet ween the steerin g column a nd t he back of
the fuse block under neat h the steerin g colum n (Fig.
16).
(7) Loosen the t wo scr ews t hat secure the clock-
spring t o the multi-function switch h ousing far
enough to engage the clearance holes in the clock-
spring rot or an d to disenga ge the clockspring case
from the switch housing.
(8) Remove th e clockspring fr om th e multi-fu nction
switch housin g. The clockspring can not be repaired.
It must be repla ced if fau lty or dam aged, or if the
dr iver a irba g ha s been deployed.
(9) If th e rem oved clocksprin g i s t o be reused, be
certa in tha t th e clockspring rotor is secured to the
clockspr ing case to ma intain clockspring cen tering
until it is reinsta lled on the steerin g colu mn. If clock-
spring cent erin g is not mainta ined, the clockspring
must be centered aga in befor e it is r einstalled. (Refer
to 8 - ELE CTRICAL/RESTRAINTS/CLOCKSPRING -
STANDARD PROCE DURE - CLOCKSPRING CE N-
TERING).
INSTALLATION
The clockspring cannot be repair ed. It mu st be
repla ced if faulty or dama ged, or i f the driver airbag
has been deployed.
If t he clockspring is not pr oper ly center ed in r ela-
tion to the st eering wh eel, steerin g sha ft and steer-
ing gear, it m ay be dama ged. (Refer to 8 -
ELECTRICAL/RESTRAINTS/CLOCKSPRING -
STANDARD PROCE DURE - CLOCKSPRING CE N-
TERING). Service repla cement clocksprings a re
sh ipped pre-centered and with t he mounting screws
backed ou t fr om t he case far en ough to en gage the
access holes in th e upper surfa ce of t he rot or. Th e
clockspr ing moun ting screws should not be tight ened
into the clockspr ing case until the clockspring ha s
been insta lled on the st eering colu mn. If t he screws
are tighten ed int o or removed from the case before
the clockspring is insta lled on a steerin g colu mn, the
clockspr ing center ing procedur e must be perform ed.
WARNING: To avoid personal injury or death, on
vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the supple-
mental restraint system before attempting any
steering wheel, steering column, airbag, seat belt
tensioner, impact sensor, or instrument panel com-
ponent diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate
the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two
minutes for the system capacitor to discharge
before performing further diagnosis or service. This
is the only sure way to disable the supplemental
restraint system. Failure to take the proper precau-
tions could result in accidental airbag deployment.
NOTE: Before starting this procedure, be certain
that the front wheels are still in the straight-ahead
position.
(1) Carefully slide the centered clockspring down
over t he steering column upper shaft un til the screws
in the clockspring ca se are aligned with the mou nt-
ing holes on the multi-fu nction switch housing.
(2) Tighten t he two screws that secu re the clock-
spring to th e multi-function switch mou nting h ous-
ing. Tighten t he screws to 2 N·m (18 in. lbs.).
(3) Reconnect the two clocksprin g lower pigtail
connect ors to t he vehicle wir e h arness conn ectors
locat ed bet ween the steerin g column a nd t he back of
the fuse block under neat h the steerin g colum n (Fig.
16).
(4) Route the clockspring lower pigt ail wires
around the lug on the bott om of the m ulti-funct ion
switch hou sing an d behind t he fuse block un der neat h
the st eering column (Fig. 17).
