3.1.6 DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES

followin g a specific t est in g pr ocedu re. Th e dia gn os-
tic test pr ocedu res cont a in st ep-by-st ep in st r uct ion s
for deter m in in g t he cau se of t h e t r ouble codes. It is
not n ecessa ry to per for m all of t he t est s in t h is book
to dia gn ose an in dividu a l code. Alwa ys begin by
rea din g t he dia gn ost ic t rou ble codes wit h t he
DRBII I". Th is will dir ect you t o t he specific t est (s)

3.1.6.1 ACTIVE CODES

ACMs m em or y a s soon a s t h e ma lfu n ct ion is de-
tect ed. A st ored code indica tes t her e was an a ct ive
code pr esen t a t som e t im e. St or ed dia gn ost ic t r ou -
ble code will r em a in st or ed u n til er a sed by t he DRB.
If a m a lfu n ct ion is n ot a ctive wh ile per form ing a
dia gn ost ic t est pr ocedu re, th e act ive code dia gn ost ic
test will not loca t e t he sou r ce of t h e pr oblem . In th is
case, t he st ored code ca n i n dica t e an ar ea to inspect .

3.2 COMMUNICATION
3.2.1 COMMUNICATION K-LINES
Th e K-Lin es a r e a gr ou p of cir cu it s th a t con nect
ea ch con tr ol m odu le t o t he Da ta Lin k Con n ect or
(DLC). E a ch cont r ol modu le is con n ect ed t o th e DLC
wit h a sin gle K-Lin e. Th e DRBIII" u ses t he K-Lin e
to com mu n ica t e wit h ea ch con tr ol m odu le. Wit h th e
use of t h e K-Lin es t h e DRBIII" is a ble t o rea d ea ch
cont r ol m odu les DTCs, sen sor displa ys, I/Os et c. If
DRBII I" comm u nica tion s wit h a par t icu la r con t r ol
modu le is lost , on e of th e possible ca uses cou ld be a
fau lt in t he modu les K-Lin e.
NOTE: It is important to note the DRBIII!
uses the K-Lines for diagnostic and
monitoring functions and is no way
connected to the CAN data bus network.
