INSTALLATION
(1) Position the MAF sensor to air cleaner h ousing
and install the ret ain ing screws (Fig. 24).
(2) Connect the air inta ke hose t o t he MAF sen sor
and tight en clam p.
(3) connect t he MAF wirin g ha rness conn ector.
(4) Connect nega tive bat tery cable.
O2 SEN SOR
DESCRIPTION
The wide band oxygen sensor measur es th e oxygen
conten t in the exhaust ga s to mon itor EGR. The sen-
sor is mou nted in the exha ust pipe at a 30 degr ee
angle to prevent the collect ion of moisture between
the sensor housing an d elem ent. The sensor is
locat ed close to t he tu rbocha rger for a qu icker
response time.
The oxygen sen sor has five wires (hea ter power
and groun d, reference voltage, and 2 wires for a
pu mp cell). The oxygen sensor connects to a six wire
harness conn ector. A non ser vicea ble trimming resis-
tor is built int o the sensor connector. Th e resistance
is depen den t on the ov er a ll length and type of sen-
sor.
OPERATION
The O2 sen sor is a planar zir coniu m dioxide (ZrO2)
du al cell limitin g curren t probe with a integral
heat er. Th e term wide ban, refers to th e ability of the
O2 sen sor to gen erat e a clear signal over a wide a ir-
fuel ra tio measu ring ra nge. As a dua l sen sor, it incor-
por ates a second O2 chamber (oxygen pump cell),
which r equires a separ ate voltage supply.
The sensor elemen t combines a sen sor cell (8) and
an oxygen pump cell (9). Both cells are made of zir-
conium-dioxide (ZrO2) and are coat ed with porous
platinum electrodes. The sensor cell operat es ju st
like a typical O2 sensor. The oxygen pump cell tra ns-
por t oxygen ions when voltage is a pplied.
A gas sample chamber (5) is sandwiched between
the oxygen pum p cell an d the sensor cell. A pump
electrode an d sensor cell electr ode are located in t he
sa mple ch amber. A sa mple passage (10) connects the
sa mple chamber to th e surrounding exh aust g a s. A
sensor cell elect rode is loca ted in th e referen ce air
channel (6), which connects to the outside air (Fig.
25).
