CAUTION: With the high pressure fuel system in
this vehicle, any residual contaminated fuel will be
removed very quickly. Shut off the engine immedi-
ately if signs of engine damage are noted.
The engine should th en be evaluated to deter mine
if th e contam inated fuel has caused any da mage t o
the fu el syst em and/or engine. Indicator s t hat t he
fuel syst em has been dam aged in clude the following:
Unstable fuel rail pressure. This can man ifest
itself as instability of idle speeds, excessive under-
sh oot/over sh oot at engine start-u p, or excessive
undershoot/overshoot wh en the engine operatin g con-
ditions chan ge. A typical engine response to a la rge
rail pressu re undershoot would be a decrea se in
engine speed or engine stall.
Excessive noise fr om the en gin e. Th is could indi-
cate poor rail pr essu re control or the inability of t he
injection system t o inject the proper am ount of fu el.
Excessive smoke (bla ck or whit e). This could
indicate the inability of the fuel system to inject th e
pr oper amount of fuel.
NOTE: If any of these conditions are exhibited after
cleaning the fuel system, proceed to the appropri-
ate engine electrical diagnostic information. Repair
the fuel system and/or engine as necessary.
