STANDARD PROCEDURE - COMPRESSION
TESTING ENGINE
(1) Warm up en gin e to oper ating temperature
(approx. 80 °C, 176°F).
(2) Sh ut off engin e.
(3) Remove engine cover (Refer to9-ENGINE-
REMOVAL).
(4) Remove glow plugs (Refer t o 8 - ELECTRICAL/
IGNITION CONTROL/GLOW PLUG - REMOVAL).
(5) Cran k engine several times with the st arter to
eliminate com bustion residues in the cylinder s.
(6) In sert compression tester ada pt er #8927 (Refer
to 9 - ENGINE - SPECIAL TOOLS) with ch eck valve
insta lled into glow plug h ole of cylinder to be tested.
(7) Connect compression tester h ose adapter #9295
to compression gauge an d test compression pr essu re
by cra nking engine wit h st arter for a t least 8 revolu -
tions.
(8) Carr y out test pr ocedu re at the remainin g cyl-
ind e rs in the s ame w ay.
(9) Compare pressure readings obta ined with the
specified pr essu res. If the pressur e readin g is below
the minim um compression pressu re or if the per mis-
sible difference bet ween the individua l cylinders is
exceeded. Refer to cylinder leak down test .
(10) Remove compression test er a nd adapter from
cylinder head.
(11) In st all glow plugs (Refer to 8 - ELE CTRICAL/
IGNITION CONTROL/GLOW PLUG - INSTALLA-
TION).
(12) Install en gin e cover (Refer to9-ENGINE-
INSTALLATION).

STANDARD PROCEDURE - CYLINDER LEAK
DOWN TEST
(1) Warm en gin e to oper ating t empera ture.
WARNING: DO NOT OPEN COOLING SYSTEM
UNLESS COOLANT TEMPERATURE IS BELOW 90C
(194°F). RISK OF INJURY TO SKIN AND EYES AS A
RESULT OF SCALDING WITH HOT COOLANT
WHICH SPLASHES OUT. RISK OF POISONING
FROM SWALLOWING COOLANT. OPEN CAP
SLOWLY AND RELEASE PRESSURE. STORE COOL-
ANT IN PROPER CONTAINERS ONLY. WEAR PRO-
TECTIVE GLOVES, CLOTHING AND EYE
PROTECTION.
NOTE: Turn cap carefully as far as first detent,
release pressure, then unscrew cap.
(2) Open cooling system cap at coola nt recover
pr essu re cont ain er.
(3) Remove engine cover (Refer to9-ENGINE-
REMOVAL).
(4) Unscr ew oil filler cap.
(5) Remove glow plugs (Refer t o 8 - ELECTRICAL/
IGNITION CONTROL/GLOW PLUG - REMOVAL).
NOTE: Crank engine at crankshaft in direction of
rotation of the engine (clockwise).
(6) Position cylin der to be t est ed to ignition Top
Dead Cen ter (DTC).
NOTE: Calibrate cylinder leak down tester and
remove check valve in screw-in fitting.
(7) Connect cylinder lea k down tester an d follow
INSPECTING In struction.
INSPECTING
NOTE: If crankshaft rotates, install retaining lock for
crankshaft/ring gear.
(1) Pressur ize cylin der with compressed air and
read off pressure loss a t cylinder leak test er. If exces-
sive pressure loss exists, deter min e possible cause
(Refer to 9 - ENGINE - STANDARD PROCEDURE).
