The ECM continua lly m onitors the fu el and emis-
sions system circuits an d sensors to decide wheth er
the system is in good oper ating con dition. The ECM
then sends th e proper lam p-on or lamp-off messa ges
to the instr umen t clust er. If the instr umen t cluster
turns on th e MIL a fter th e bulb test , it ma y indica te
that a malfunction has occurred and that the fuel
and emissions systems ma y require service. For
pr oper diagn osis of the fuel and emissions systems,
the ECM, the CAN data bus, or the electron ic mes-
sa ge inputs to the instrumen t cluster th at con trol th e
MIL, a diagnostic scan tool is required. Refer to the
appropriate diagnostic in formation.
MULTI - FUNCTION INDICA-
TOR
DESCRIPTION
A m ulti-funct ion indicator is sta ndard equipment
on all instr ument clust ers. Th e multi-funct ion indica -
tor is locat ed near th e lower edge of the instru ment
cluster, direct ly below the speedomet er. The multi-
function in dicator consists of a Liquid Crystal Dis-
play (LCD) unit and fou r push bu tton-controlled
switch es that are solder ed on to the instrument clu s-
ter electronic circuit boa rd. Th e LCD is visible
through a large r ectan gular cutou t in th e instrument
cluster overlay, while the four switch push but tons
extend t hrough a black pla st ic switch bezel located
on the cluster lens directly below t he LCD. The four
multi-fu nction in dicator push buttons allow the veh i-
cle oper ator t o configur e an d adjust severa l of the
display feat ures. Th e buttons are labeled from left to
right: “mi” (miles) or “km” (kilomet ers), a n icon
depicting an an alog clock face (clock), “"” (minu s),
and “+” (plu s).
The mult i-fun ction indicator LCD displays both
alpha-num eric cha racter s a nd numerous icon s to pro-
vide inform ation to the vehicle oper ator. Th e indica -
tions of the m ulti-funct ion indicator are not visible
when the LCD is not illuminat ed. When illuminat ed
the indications appear as dark chara cters and icon s
silhouetted a gainst an amber field. When the exter ior
lighting is turned Off, the display is illuminat ed a t
maximu m bright ness. When the exter ior lighting is
turned On the display illumina tion level ca n be
adju st ed in concer t with the cluster gener al illumina-
tion ligh ting using the “+” (plus) and “"” (minus)
multi-fu nction indica tor push butt ons. The multi-
function in dicator LCD unit a nd push bu tton
switch es are serviced as a unit with the instr umen t
cluster.
OPERATION
The m ulti-funct ion indica tor has several displa y
capabilities includin g odom eter, t rip odometer, clock,
engine oil level data , gea r select or indicator
(PRNDL), certain diagnostic in format ion and, on
vehicles so equ ipped, an opt iona l Active Service SYS-
Tem (ASSYST) engine oil m ain tena nce indicator and
an opt iona l outside ambient temper ature indica tor.
The mult i-fun ction indica tor is complet ely controlled
by th e instrumen t clust er logic cir cuit, and that logic
will allow th is in dication t o be viewed wh enever t he
multi-fu nction indicator Liquid Cryst al Displa y
(LCD) is activat ed. Therefor e, the indicator remains
functional regardless of the ignition switch position.
With th e ign ition switch in t he Off or Accessory posi-
tions and the key rem oved fr om the ignition lock cyl-
inder, the display is a ctivated when the par k lamps
are tu rned On or, for about thirty seconds after any
one of th e mult i-fun ction indicator swit ch push but -
tons is depressed. Ot herwise, the display unit is
active for about thirty seconds after the key is
inser ted into the ignition lock cylinder, an d inact ive
about thir ty secon ds a fter the key is rem oved from
the ign ition lock cylin der.
The multi-fu nction in dicator “mi” (miles) or
“km”(kilomet ers) switch push bu tton is used to con-
trol the odomet er/tr ip odometer display m odes. The
multi-fu nction indica tor clock switch push button is
used t o cont rol the clock/out side t empera ture displa y
modes. The multi-funct ion in dicator “+” (plus) and
“"” (minus) switch push but tons ar e used to adjust
the cluster gener al illumination dim ming level, th e
clock, a nd other cluster settings. See th e owner’s
manual in the vehicle glove box for more in format ion
on th e features, use, operation and setting proce-
du res for the va rious standa rd a nd opt ional mult i-
function indicator displays.
Proper testin g of the mu lti-funct ion indicator LCD
unit, the CAN data bus a nd the electr onic data bus
message inputs to th e i n st rumen t cluster that con trol
som e of the multi-fu nction indica tor functions
requires the use of a diagnostic scan tool. Refer to
the appr opr iate dia gnostic inform ation. Addition al
details for t he odomet er/tr ip odomet er, t he clock, the
gear select or indicator, the ambient t empera ture indi-
cator an d th e ASSYST warn ing and reminder fun c-
tions of the multi-function indicator may be found
elsewh ere in this service in forma tion.
ODOM ET ER
DESCRIPTION
An odom eter and trip odomet er are st andar d
equipm ent in a ll instrument cluster s. The odomet er
and tr ip odometer values a re displayed on the left
side of th e m ulti-funct ion indica tor Liquid Crystal
Displa y (LCD). Th e LCD is solder ed onto t he cluster
electronic circu it boar d a nd is visible through a win -
dow wit h a clear lens located near the lower edge of
8J - 22 INSTRUMENT CLUSTER VA
