Hard wired circu itry conn ects th e ext erior lighting
system component s to th e electrical system of th e
vehicle. These ha rd wired circuits are integra l to sev-
eral wire harn esses, wh ich are routed t hroughout t he
vehicle and r etained by many differ ent meth ods.
These circuits may be con nected to each ot her, to th e
vehicle electr ical system and to the exter ior light ing
system components thr ough th e use of a combina tion
of soldered splices, splice block connectors, and man y
differen t types of wire ha rness terminal connectors
and in su lators. Refer to th e appropriate wiring infor-
mation. Th e wiring inform ation inclu des wiring dia-

further details on wire harn ess routing and reten -
tion, as well as pin-out and loca tion views for the
var ious wire ha rness connectors, splices an d grounds.
OPERATION
Following are paragr aphs that briefly describe the
operat ion of each of the m ajor exter ior light ing sys-
tems. The hard wired circuits an d com pon ents of the
exterior lighting syst ems may be dia gnosed and
tested using conventional diagn ost ic t ools a nd proce-
du res. However, conventional diagnostic methods
may not prove con clusive in the diagnosis of the wip-
ers, turn signa ls a nd en gin e st art cont rol modu le
locat ed within t he fuse block un dernea th the steerin g
column, t he E lectroMechanical Instrument Clust er
(EMIC), th e Engin e Contr ol Module (ECM), or the
Contr oller Area Networ k (CAN) da ta bus network.
The m ost relia ble, efficient, and accu rate means to
diagnose the electronic module within the fu se block,
the EMIC, t he ECM, a nd the CAN data bus networ k
input s and ou tputs r elat ed to the var ious exterior
lighting syst ems requires the u se of a diagn ost ic scan
tool. Refer to the appropriate diagnostic infor mation.
BACKUP LAMPS
The backup (or reverse) lamps ha ve a pa th to
ground received at all t imes t hrough t he vehicle wire
harness from a ground point located on th e fra me
near the left end of the ta ilgate sill. The ba ckup
lam ps r eceive batt ery cur rent on th e ba ckup lamp
su pply circuit only when t he backup lam p swit ch cir-
cuit of the Tran sm ission Ran ge Sensor (TRS) integral
to the gear shift er assembly is closed by the gear
sh ifter m echan ism.
BRAKE LAMPS
The brake (or stop) lamps have a path to ground at
all times through th e vehicle wire harness from a
ground point located on the frame nea r the left end
of the tailga te sill. The Center High Mounted St op
Lamp (CHMSL) has a pat h to groun d at all t imes
through t he vehicle wire har ness from a gr ound poin t
on th e left side of th e da sh pa nel. The brake lam ps
and CHMSL r eceive battery cu rren t on the br ake
lam p switch ou tput cir cuit when th e brake la mp
switch is closed by the brake pedal ar m.
DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS
Vehicles ma nufactured for sale in Cana da illumi-
nate the low beam hea dlamp bulb when th e engin e is
running an d the ext erior lamps a re turned off. This
featu re is ena bled by th e right and left Daytime Run -
ning La mps (DRL) relays. Wh en the DRL relays ar e
de-energized, they provide fused battery curren t fr om
the circuit K26 rela y to th e h eadla mp low beams.
When the headlamps a re turned On using the left
(lighting) control sta lk of th e multi-function switch
the DRL relays are energized, wh ich retu rns control
of t he hea dlamps to the hea dlamp switch circuitry of
the mu lti-funct ion switch. The cir cuit K26 relay is
energized by th e Elect roMecha nica l Instrument Clus-
