OPERATION
The pa rk brake indica tor gives an indication t o the
vehicle oper ator when the par king br ake is applied.
This indicator is contr olled by a transistor on th e
instr umen t cluster circu it boar d ba sed u pon a hard
wired input from th e par k brake switch . The park
brake indicator Light Emitting Diode (LED) is com-
pletely controlled by th e instrument cluster logic cir-
cuit, a nd th at logic will only allow t his indica tor to
operat e wh en the instru ment cluster det ects t hat the
ign ition switch is in th e On position . Therefore, th e
LED will always be off wh en the ign ition switch is in
any position except On. The LED only illum inates
when it is provided a pa th to gr ound by the instru-
ment clu st er t ransist or. The in st rument clust er will
turn on the par k bra ke indica tor for th e followin g
reason s:
• Park Brake Switch Input - Each time th e
cluster det ects groun d on the pa rk bra ke indicator
signal circuit (park bra ke switch closed = park bra ke
applied or not fully released) while the ignition
switch is in the On posit ion, the br ake indicator is
illuminated. The indicator remains illuminated until
the brake signal indicator input to the cluster is an
open circuit (pa rk brake switch open = par k brake
fully released), or u ntil the ignition switch is turned
to th e Off posit ion, whichever occur s first.
The pa rk brake switch on th e pa rk brake peda l
mecha nism provides a hard wired ground input to
the instrument cluster cir cuitr y through the park
brake in dicator signal circuit whenever the park
brake is applied or n ot fu lly released. The t wo
switch es a re connect ed in series between gr ound an d
the instr umen t cluster. The pa rk brake switch and
the input circuit to t he instrumen t cluster can be
diagnosed using convent iona l diagn ost ic tools an d
meth ods. For proper diagnosis of th e instrumen t
cluster circuitry tha t cont rols the park br ake indica -
tor, a diagnostic sca n t ool is r equired. Refer to the
appropriate diagnostic in formation.
SEAT BELT I N DI CAT OR
DESCRIPTION
A seat belt indicator is st andard equipm ent on all
instr umen t clu st ers. The seat belt indicator is locat ed
near the lower edge of th e instrument cluster, to the
right of the mu lti-funct ion indica tor display. Th e
seatbelt indicator consists of the Inter nat ional Con-
trol an d Display Symbol icon for “Seat Belt”
imprinted within a r ectan gular cut out in the opa que
layer of the instrument cluster overlay. The dar k
outer layer of the overlay pr events t he in dicator fr om
being cl early visible when it is not illuminat ed. A red
Light Emitting Diode (LED) behin d the cut out in the
opa que layer of the overla y causes the icon to appear
silhouetted again st a r ed field th rough the translu-
cent outer layer of th e overla y wh en th e in dicator is
illuminated from behind by the LE D, which is sol-
dered on to the inst rument cluster elect ronic circuit
board. The seat belt indicator is serviced a s a unit
with t he in st rumen t cluster.
OPERATION
The sea tbelt indicator gives an indica tion to the
vehicle opera tor of th e sta tus of the driver side front
seat belt. Th is indicator is controlled by a t ransist or
on the instr umen t cluster circu it board based upon
cluster progr amming a nd a hard wired input received
from t he sea t belt switch on the dr iver side front seat
belt. The seat belt indica tor Light Emitting Diode
(LED) is completely controlled by the in strument
cluster logic circu it, a nd t hat logic will only a llow
this indicator to operat e when the instrument cluster
detects tha t t he ignition switch is in the On position.
Therefor e, th e LED will always be off when th e ign i-
tion switch is in any position except On. Th e LED
only illu minates when it is pr ovided a pat h to grou nd
by the instrument cluster tr ansist or. The instrument
cluster will tu rn on the seat belt indica tor for the fol-
lowing r easons:
• Seatbelt Reminder Function - Each time th e
cluster detect s th at the ignition switch h as been
turned to the On position t he sea tbelt indicator will
be illu minated as a reminder for about six seconds,
or until t he ignition switch is turned t o the Off posi-
tion, whichever occu rs first. This reminder fun ction
will occu r regardless of the sta tus of the input
received by the cluster from the driver side front seat
belt switch.
• Driver Side Front Seat Belt Switch Input -
Following th e seatbelt reminder fu nction, each time
the cluster detect s ground on the sea tbelt in dicator
dr iver circu it (seat belt switch closed = seatbelt
unbu ckled) with t he ignition switch in th e On posi-
tion, the sea tbelt indicator will be illumina ted. Th e
seatbelt indicator rema ins illu minated until the seat
belt switch in pu t t o the cluster is an open circuit
(seat belt switch open = sea tbelt buckled), or unt il
the ignition switch is tu rned to th e Off position,
which ever occurs first.
• Ai r bag I ndicator Mal f uncti on - Following the
seatbelt reminder funct ion, ea ch time the cluster
detects a malfunction in th e a irbag (SRS) indica tor or
the airbag indica tor circuit, the cluster will flash th e
seatbelt in dicator on a nd off. The cluster will con-
tinue to flash t he sea tbelt indicator u ntil t he a irba g
indicator circu it fa ult is resolved, or unt il t he ignition
switch is tur ned to the Off posit ion, whichever occu rs
first.
The instrumen t clu st er continua lly m onit ors th e
st atus of th e driver side fron t seat belt switch and
the airba g indicator circuit t o deter mine the pr oper
seatbelt indicator response. The seat belt switch is
