STANDARD PROCEDURE - CHECKING AND
REPAIRING CONNECTING RODS
NOTE: Connecting rods with blue discoloration,
cross scores or notches must be replaced. Com-
pensate for different weights by milling off the bal-
ancing weight.
(1) In spect connect ing rod for discoloring, cross
scor es and notches.
NOTE: Connecting rod and bearing cap are marked
in sets and attached with two sleeves.
(2) Bolt con necting rod bear ing cap to connectin g
rod. Tigh ten con necting rod bearing caps t o init ial
specifica tion (Refer to 9 - ENGINE/ENGINE BLOCK/
PISTON & CONNECTING ROD - INSTALLATION).
(3) Usin g a dia l indicator, m easure conn ectin g rod
bearing basic bore, r epa ir as necessa ry (F ig. 38).
NOTE: If excessive wear is present, press in new
connecting rod bushings.
(4) Measur e connectin g rod bushing inn er dia me-
ter (Fig. 38).
(5) In spect wr istpin bushing.
(6) Measur e pist on pin end pla y in connecting rod
bu sh in g.
(7) Measur e peak to valley h eigh t of connect ing
rod bushing on inside.
